The Fall Nails I’m Saving From Fashion Month
From translucent brown and black cherry to deep blue and silver, these are the autumn nail colours worth trying now, plus the polishes to recreate them at home.

There are two points in the year when I suddenly want to change my nails: the first properly warm week of spring and September. Fashion month has given me a few ideas. At Diane von Furstenberg in New York, nail artist Miss Pop created translucent brown and green manicures inspired by tinted sunglasses. Away from the runway, chocolate brown, dark red, olive, blue and silver are all appearing in the autumn beauty collections.
What I like most this year is the choice of finishes. Brown can be sheer rather than espresso-dark. Red can be almost black. Silver can be reduced to a fine French tip instead of full chrome. If your usual autumn manicure is burgundy followed by more burgundy, there are better options.

Translucent brown and green
The manicure at Diane von Furstenberg is the fashion-week reference I’d take straight to a nail appointment. Miss Pop used Essie shades to create sheer brown and green nails, with the natural nail still visible underneath.
It’s a good option if you usually wear nude or milky polish but want more colour for autumn. Brown looks particularly good with gold jewellery, while a sheer olive or moss green works with black, navy and chocolate.
A jelly polish will give you the closest finish at home. Keep the coats thin so you can still see the nail beneath the colour.

Chocolate and espresso
Chocolate brown is surprisingly easy to wear. It looks especially good with black, camel, grey and dark denim, and a high-gloss espresso feels sharper than the softer latte browns we’ve seen over the past few years.
Current Fall 2026 reporting includes suede-like browns, clay and warmer brown-red shades, including a JinSoon colour used at Proenza Schouler’s Fall/Winter 2026 show.
I’d keep the nails fairly short and the finish extremely glossy. The darker the brown, the less it reads as a neutral and the better it looks with rings and a watch.

Black cherry
Dark red is an autumn staple for a reason, but this year I’d skip the obvious burgundy for black cherry.
Look for a red dark enough to appear almost black in the evening while still reading as red in daylight. On short, glossy nails, it works particularly well once wool, leather, suede and heavier tailoring come back into the wardrobe.
Current autumn nail coverage includes cherry mocha, wine and very deep reds, so there are plenty of shades between classic red and near-black.

The early-2000s almost-black manicure
If you’re looking for 2000s fall nail inspiration, skip the novelty nail art and go straight to the colours.
OPI has brought Lincoln Park at Midnight back for its 2026 Most Requested collection. The original shade dates to 2006 and has a subtle shimmer, while Lincoln Park After Dark gives you the familiar purple-black crème.
Both work particularly well on short square nails. Add black tailoring, a vintage bag and plenty of jewellery and there isn’t much else the manicure needs to do.

Choose this one if you prefer a near-black purple crème without shimmer.
Deep green
Bright green can be difficult to wear. Forest, olive and almost-black green are much easier.
The trick is choosing a shade dark enough that it doesn’t compete with everything else you’re wearing. Deep green looks especially good against charcoal, navy, chocolate and black, and it’s an easy alternative if you already own more dark-red nail polish than you could reasonably finish.

Not green, but a useful alternative here if the darker autumn palette appeals to you and green doesn’t.
Deep blue
Navy nails are much easier to wear than bright blue. From a distance they can look almost black, but the blue becomes obvious in daylight.
I’d pair navy with black, charcoal or brown rather than trying to find something blue in the outfit to match it. It is particularly good with silver jewellery.
If you want something lighter, a translucent blue gives you colour without committing to a fully opaque manicure.

A very glossy red
There is nothing wrong with ignoring every new nail trend and choosing red.
For autumn, a slightly deeper red with an immaculate glossy finish works with almost everything. CHANEL Le Vernis is the splurge in this list, while OPI’s Malaga Wine Not? adds shimmer if you want something less classic.
The important bit is the finish. Red polish shows chips quickly, so this is one manicure where a good top coat and tidy cuticles make a noticeable difference.

Silver French tips
For fall French nails, I’d swap the standard white tip for silver.
You can keep it very fine over a translucent pink or milky base, which looks particularly good with silver jewellery, or make the metallic tip slightly thicker for evening. If full chrome feels like too much, this gives you the same idea without covering the whole nail.
A sheer base is important here. An opaque nude underneath can make the manicure look much heavier.

Four to take to your next nail appointment
