My favourite Halloween nails are the ones that still look good when the costume comes off. Black cherry, oxblood, velvet cat-eye, glossy black and a very fine black French all have enough drama for Halloween without requiring ten tiny pumpkin stickers on top. That doesn’t mean your manicure has to be minimal. If you want blood drips, fangs or a spiderweb, have them. I just like giving the art a strong colour story underneath so the whole set still looks intentional.

Black Cherry Is The Obvious Choice

If you want dark nails without going fully black, black cherry is hard to beat. It sits between red, wine and near-black depending on the light, and a high-gloss finish makes it look almost lacquered.

Oxblood Looks Better In Red

For oxblood, I would take a reference that still reflects deep red rather than brown or purple. In daylight you should be able to see the red underneath.

Velvet Cat-Eye Is the Dramatic One

A dark red magnetic polish can create that moving strip or diffused velvet light across the nail. The placement matters, so show your nail tech the exact finish you mean. ‘Cat-eye’ can describe a sharp beam, a softer velvet effect or something much more metallic.

Try a Black French on a Sheer Base

A fine black tip on a sheer pink or nude base is one of the cleaner ways to bring black into the manicure. On shorter nails I’d keep the line narrow. On longer almond nails you can make the tip deeper without it taking over the whole nail.

Blood-Red Chrome Needs Subtlety

Red chrome can go candy-bright very quickly. If you want the darker Halloween version, look for a deep red base with a fine chrome effect rather than a mirror-bright scarlet. Again, this is one where the image you take to the appointment will do more work than the words.

Near-Black Plum Works After Halloween Too

If you liked the dark-plum manicure from earlier in the season, push it a little darker for Halloween. Aubergine and plum-noir shades can look black indoors and purple in brighter light, which gives you the mood without repeating the black-cherry look.

One Detail Can Be Enough

A tiny fang, crescent moon, spiderweb or blood-drip accent is much more noticeable when the other nails are doing less. I’d put it on one or two nails and let the colour or finish carry the rest.

And if you want a full illustrated set, do that. Halloween is one of the few times of year when the manicure can be completely theatrical. The useful part is knowing which colour and finish you want underneath the art before the appointment starts.
